About the Temple of Dendera Egypt (
Denderah
)
Dendera Temple 1
Introduction:-
Dendera (
Denderah
) is an archaeological locality inEgypt
just outside the town of Qena (62 km north of Luxor temple) in the region of MiddleEgypt
.The Temple complex of Dendera (
Denderah
) is one of the best preserved complexes inEgypt
.It lies around 2.5km south-east of Dendera (
Denderah
) (known to the AncientEgypt
ians as Iunet or Tantere) the sixth Nome of UpperEgypt
.Dendera (
Denderah
) was the main city of the sixthEgypt
ian Nome.A Nome is like a state or province.
The whole complex extends to around 40,000 Square metres and is surrounded by a large mud brick enclosure wall.
There visitors will find the Temple of
Hathor
, never finished, but well preserved.Dendera (
Denderah
) was also the site of an Ancient cult center forHathor
.Hathor
was the goddess of pleasure and love and was generally shown as a cow or woman with a cow's head. With roots in
Egypt
ian history that stretch back to 2600 BC, the Dendera (Denderah
) Temple complex that is to be found today in the tiny town of Dendera (Denderah
) is a true feat of human engineering. The complex includes the Temple of
Hathor
, which is widely held to be the best preserved Temple in the entire country, which is certainly impressive, as there are plenty of temples in excellent states to be found here such as those at Temple ofabydos
and Edfu.Others give the derivation from the sky and fertility goddess
Hathor
, also associated with Aphrodite, who was specially worshiped there. The crocodile is recognized as the deity of the city and was also venerated as such in other
Egypt
ian cities, which caused many quarrels, notably with Ombos..
Temple of Dendera (
Denderah
) was built by the Ptolomies and later elements were added by the Romans. The complex included two birth houses, a sacred Lake, two chapels dedicated to Osiris and a chapel dedicated to Isis.
The complex was surrounded by High mud brick walls that were built in alternating concave and convex sections.
This produced a wavy structure that is assumed to signify the primordial sea which surrounds the symbolic mound of birth and regeneration on which the Temple was built.
The Dendera (
Denderah
) complex has long been one of the most tourist accessible AncientEgypt
ian places of worship. It used to be possible to visit virtually every part of the complex, from the crypts to the roof.
Unfortunately the highest part of the roof of
Hathor
Temple has been closed since 2003.The second stage of the roof was closed in November 2004, after a tourist got too close to the edge and fell to her death on the bedrock below.
One of the best things about the Dendera (
Denderah
) Temple as it stands today is that the vast majority of the structure is open to visitor exploration.Local authorities have done well to allow tourists here a sensible amount of free reign, and as a result visitors often rank a trip to Dendera (
Denderah
) as top of their list of most enjoyable things to do while inEgypt
.The site also includes such tourist provisions as a coffee shop and eatery, a bazaar for shopping, and a well-equipped visitors center that fills you in on the site's unique past.
