The temple is advocated to Ramesses II
`s victory against the Hittites
in the Battle of Kadesh
. His choice of location for the temple, at the southern gateway into Egypt serves as a billboard to intimidate his Nubian neighbours and to advertise his might.
In 1959,
faced a modern threat in the form of the planned construction of the Aswan High Dam, which threatened to inundate it. This encouraged the international community to start a campaign to save these Nubian monuments. With the participation of Unesco, a project started to move the temple. The salvage operation began in 1964. The temple was dismantled block by block, and moved to a location 64m higher and 200m away from the rising water.

history of abu simbel
The Nile river has been pivotal to life and death in Egypt. On the West Bank in luxor
many of the New Kingdom pharaohs built their mortuary temples. These would be ways for the worship of the King after he died and became a God and they were cult temples. Additionally they were used for events like the Feast of the Valley.

The Temple of Abu Simbel
On its eastern banks, its Egyptian temples were built to honor and worship the gods and living pharaohs. Egypt's tombs and funerary rituals were set on the river's west banks, marking death. Defined by east and west, Egypt's ancient temples tell the tales of its history, culture, mythology and rites of worship.
