History of The
Temple of Philae

• The
Ancient times
The
Philae
Temple was built over a three-century period, by the Greek Ptolemaic
dynasty and the Roman Participate.
The essential
Temple was dedicated to Isis
ian Goddess , but other temples and
holy buildings were dedicated to her son Horus (
) and the goddess Hathor.
In Ptolemaic times Goddess
hathor was associated with Isis
Egypt
ian Goddess , who
was in turn associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite.
For centuries the
Philae
Temple complex was the holiest site for Isis
Egypt
ian Goddess
worshippers.
• The Byzantine emperor :-
The Temples of the island were neglected, and some of them even destroyed, after the
persecution of the Christians by the Roman Emperors. The
Temple was officially closed
down in the 6th century A.D. by the Byzantine emperor Justinian who changed the main
Temple to a church.
• The Christian and Islamic effect :-
As
Philae
was a seat of the
Ancient Egypt
ian faith, it was also for the Christian religion.
Ruins of a Christian church were discovered there , and more than one adytum bore
traces of having been made to serve at different eras the purposes of a chapel of God
Osiris and of Christ. The
Philae
Temple was changed into a church for the Virgin Mary.
finally the
Temple was closed by Muslim in the 7th century.
How to reach The

If time permits, a night visit for the Sound and Light Show is very worthwhile as the
temples look stunning under floodlights. Shows are presented in English, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Arabic.
The Sound and Light Show narrates the legendary story of how Isis
